The Instituto Cervantes is
non-profit, public institution founded in
1991 by the Spanish Government in order
to promote the Spanish language and the
cultures of Spanish speaking countries
throughout the world.
It arranges the DELE exams
and organizes cultural activities such as
musical events, conferences, exhibitions,
cinema and theater, in collaboration with
other organizations and institutions,
worldwide. Its modern libraries, equipped
with state-of-the-art technology, provide
access to all sorts of information
concerning Spanish and Latin American
cultures.
The Instituto Cervates has
offices in Albuquerque, Amman Algiers,
Athens, Beirut, Bremen, Brussels,
Bordeaux, Bucharest, Casablanca, Chicago,
Damascus, Dublin, Cairo, Istanbul, Fez,
Lisbon, London, Manchester, Manila,
Milan, Moscow, Munich, Naples, New York,
Paris, Rabat, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Sao
Paulo, Tanger, Tel Aviv, Tetuan,
Toulouse, Tunisia, Utrecht, Warsaw and
Vienna.
Additionally, the DELE exams
are organized in another 85 cities,
worldwide. The headquarters are located
in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, the
birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author
of Don Quixote.
The Instituto Cervantes is
overseen by a Board of Trustees whose
Honorary President is H.M. the King of
Spain. The Board of Trustees also
includes prominent representatives of
Spanish and Latin-American literature and
culture, the Cervantes Prize winner Mario
Vargas Llosa, the Spanish actor Fernando
Fernán-Gómez and representatives of
Universities, Academies and other social
and cultural institutions.
